Do you know the GOP CLIMATE CHANGE back story?

To mark the historic event tomorrow  when the US House of Representatives hold a hearing on Climate Change (marking the first serious issue it has tackled  in months) don’t forget what the right already knows and believes about climate change.

smoke stackSee it for yourself. In a May 2001 report from then President George W Bush’s special task force on Energy and the Environment (researched and reported by the James Baker Institute) there are dire warnings about climate change, and the conclusion is, that in order to prevent catastrophic climate events, all branches of our government must come together to address the critical problem of excessive greenhouse gasses.

The GOP knew and believed all this in 2001.

Some where along the way, they came to unknow it.

We should remind them that we also know what they already know, whether they want to admit it or not:

This is the most serious issue humanity will ever face.

Here’s a link to the full report. See page 35 for the exact quote that will make you want to vomit:

CONSCIOUS EVOLUTION

Buckminster Fuller’s highly evolved mind was powered by a fierce belief in the potential of all humanity to evolve into something better.  WHERE%22S BUCKY SLIDE.004He may have been just an ordinary man in his time, as he insisted, but he was clearly living far ahead of it.  Bucky believed we humans were evolving into a higher life form, a “syntropic” species that placed cooperation and community above competition.  Once we did this, Bucky said, “we would make all the right choices for all the right reasons”.

Bucky believed we could do this in time to pass our final examination as a species. He said to pass this test all we needed to do was make a subtle shift in our thinking.  He emphasized the importance of the individual, that we are each “trim tabs” and have great power. He would say that if we would simply set out to do it, we really could create a world that works for 100% of humanity.

This of course, is all about exerting our will to create a clean energy world.  As Bucky knew, clean energy will transform our environment, our economy, and our lives in beautiful and exciting ways we cannot yet even imagine.  We will be able to work less and stay closer to home, which will reduce energy consumption even further.  We will be able to break the stranglehold on our health and the futures of species by a corporate dominated world focused only on profit making.  There is a revolution in the air on Bucky’s beloved United Spaceship Planet Earth.  It is an exciting time to be alive.

“Either war is obsolete or man is.”

Buckminster Fuller’s position on another American war against the world would be clear:

“Either war is obsolete or man is.  To not evolve beyond war is to choose oblivion over utopia.”

In the words found on Bucky’s desk when he died:images-24

“With the highest aeronautical and engineering facilities of the world redirected from weaponry to livingry production, all humanity would have the option of becoming enduringly successful.

“Humanity now has the opportunity, for the first time in its history, to operate our planet in such a manner as to support and accommodate all humanity at a substantially more advanced standard of living than any human beings have ever experienced.

“It is a matter of converting the high technology from weaponry to livingry.  The essence of livingry is human-life advantaging and environment controlling.

“It is now technically feasible with presently proven technology to impound and distribute to humanity the vast overabundance of our cosmic energy income — from the sun, vegetable produced alcohols, and sun-derived wind power and wave power. Through foresight and design, it is possible to phase our all further use of fossil fuels and atomic energy which comprise nature’s cosmic energy savings account.”

“Enterprise is too narrowly focused on money making . . . and too shortsighted to address those biggest, most important, long-time tasks that are vital to sustaining humans on board our planet.”

“Our more-with-less technology can now enable us to do what could never be done before. We can become an omni-integrated, majorly literate, unified Spaceship Earth society.”

Bucky called on each individual to “evolve consciously” and to demand from himself,  his peers and his government, a “design science revolution” to wean us off fossil fuels and transform the human environment into true sustainability for humanity.

It all starts with understanding what is possible.

So, yeah, like, no more money for bombs, President Obama.  Use your words.

WHERE’S BUCKY?

Stanford University owns Bucky’s archives, but does not offer a single course that even mentions his name. At left is number of search hits for “Buckminster Fuller” in online course catalogs of various colleges.  It seems hilariously sad and shameful that Stanford’s oil-executive-rich board of trustees bought Bucky’s archives and then did nothing with Bucky’s genius for their own school’s students.   The only question I have is did they throw the invisibility cloak over him on purpose or by neglect?

Afterall, Bucky had been calling loudly for a transfer off fossil fuels as far back as 1941.  In 1981, President Ronald Wilson Reagan awarded Bucky the Medal of Freedom, calling him “one of the greatest minds of our generation”.  Bucky died a couple years later in 1983, and then what? Stanford Univeristy buys Bucky’s archives from the Fuller family in l999, that’s what. And then what? Today, fifteen years later,  Stanford offers ZERO classes about Bucky, the man called “the Leonardo da Vinci of the 2oth century”.

Today, Bucky is virtually invisible and unknown to most people.

Where did Bucky go and why?

If you know, please explain. I am perplexed.

(The pubic can access Bucky’s papers at Stanford.  Look up the Special Collections DIvision.

Bucky your ideas up to save the world.

urban-farming-01_eV22M_7071Surely we are not just going to sit back watching as the natural world turns against our species of greedy, thoughtless humans, and prepares to sweep us right off the planet, so that she can learn from her mistakes and begin again?

The world cries out for a new, more feminine brand of leadership, a new paradigm in which “governance is nurturance” as Bucky put it.  “Livingry” must replace weaponry.  This very idea, that we must work together to make the world work for everybody is not communism or socialism, but something relatively new: COMMON SENSE.

Haven’t we all poured too much energy into these human lives of ours to sit back and do nothing? Isn’t it about time for pitchforks and torches in the street, figuratively speaking  at least?

A Herculean effort is required.

It is long past time for a clean, green, free energy revolution.  The “free” is the problem part, of course.  How can we expect the existing energy industry to let this happen?  The answer is they have no choice — because we, as a species, may have no choice.   So, even if there is a huge ransom for our freedom, wouldn’t it be worth it?  Could we lease the sun back to the fossil fuel industry, maybe in exchange for development of the clean energy technology they could have given us over thirty years ago?

Where the heck are our solar powered cars already? What’s taking them so long?

Bucky would ask each of us to man our keyboards — the world’s most mighty swords — and speak truth to power.  Speak as a mother, a daughter, a sister, a human being.  Be a “trim tab” and demand more of our elected officials.   Show up.   Speak up.  Sign petitions.  Post on Facebook, Twitter, Email friends.

As Bucky said, the only thing that really matters is the truth.  And when you know the truth, you have a responsibility to speak it.

Whether or not humanity passes its final examination is an individual decision.

Getting it right means doing it now.

Buck your ideas up while there’s still time.

And never forget, where there is a will there is no other way.

An economic model to speed up humanity’s evolution?

Salt marsh mosaics

Ready or not, Bucky’s ideas and integrities are having major impact on the world in 2014.

Buckminster Fuller’s determination to improve the living conditions of all humanity made him famous in the 1960’s and 1970’s, and now Bucky’s ideas are circling back around. These these are not just wide eyed Utopian ideas, but they are also practical.  It is a fact that “we can create a world that works for 100% of humanity, without ecological damage” if only we set ourselves out on that task.

Good things are happening. For example, exciting  breakthroughs in clean energy storage are being reported, using, believe it or not, the Nobel Prize winning Buckminsterfullerene technology, those magical carbon 60 molecules which were  predicted entirely in Bucky’s magnum opus, Synergetic Geometry, which can be found linked on your left.  (Read all about these amazing carbon molecules named after Bucky here.)

One of the most remarkable papers I’ve read about how to solve the world’s most pressing problems is from Italy, by Ivan Klinec.  It’s about using Bucky’s ideas related to “syntrophy” to fundamentally change the economy in a way that would solve humanity’s entire global eco-economic crises.

The paper explains how using a syntropic economic model could help bring about the needed syntropic* evolution of  human beings.  This is awesome reading that gives a human hope. It’s not just about solving the global economic crisis, but more importantly, about solving the whole global ecosystem/humanity crisis, which, as Bucky pointed out, is mainly a personality crisis.

Bucky spoke about what it would take to evolve the human personality beyond greed and competition, and toward cooperation and compassion. One way, he said, would be to demand a more feminine type of leadership, where “governance = nuturance”, but the right really hates that kind of talk, since they’re not even letting us own our own vaginas these days, so let’s just say what we need is a “new kind of thinking”.

Bucky’s thinking was magical.  The kind of Bucky-inspired economy  would help humans evolve more quickly into a higher level of species. Here’s the link to the PDF. After you read it, come back and share it.  We need to build awareness of important ideas like this one.

It’s our turn now.

meditationIt is time for women to rise up with new energy, wisdom and nurturing ideals to help create a better world.  Because men have botched things up just a bit, it is time for women to step up. Of course you don’t actually have a be a woman, but you do need to think like one. Key components of this are Compassion, Cooperation, Community.  Not weaponry, domination and greed.

We need conscious evolution, and we need it quick. Women must become leaders of an awakened world. We can live up to the brilliant potential that R. Buckminster Fuller saw in women, and in all humanity.

Bucky wrote in a 1968 McCall’s Magazine article titled “Why Women Will Rule the World” that in a world led by women, all would strive toward the success for 100% of humanity, and thus would be able do so.  By pursuing ‘livingry’ not weaponry, women can demand that ‘governance is nurturance’ — which would mean America could win hearts and minds the old fashion way, by giving a damn.  We could use creative ideas like Bucky’s “livingry services industry” — which would provide basic human services to the world’s needy, with environmental stewardship. It’s not socialism or communism, it’s buckyism!

Bucky’s optimism and belief in humanity’s potential — with women at the helm — is contagious:

“With enough sustenance and primary accommodation available for everyone, yesterday’s competition will be obsolete, and the competitive fighting urges will be important only to sport, lovemaking and hunting and in the abstract realms of poetry, art, and science.

“Twenty first century man will be preoccupied almost entirely by scientific and poetical research.  Women will convert man’s scientific findings into industrial production. Women will be the undisputed managers of our 60,000-miles-an-hour speeding spaceship Earth in our ever vaster exploration of Universe.

“When prehistoric man brought home a strange new creature, it was woman’s job to decide whether to kill it, skin it and eat it, or whether to keep it alive to carry and pull loads, to crop hair for wool, or to milk it — or both. Only women know intuitively that nature impounds the sun’s energy through vegetation and gradually she domesticated fruits, nuts, seeds and animals.

“The Twentieth century has seen women rising once more and inadvertently taking over fundamental ownership of industry. She has unintentionally outlived her husband, who, bereft of fundamental frontiering tasks, vented his fighting instincts on gambling, money games and boastful drinking. Woman is the domesticator, the manufacturer, and the industrialist.

“Woman’s rise to leadership is essential to the future of humanity.”

Doing this may be all it takes to steer Bucky’s once famous “United Spaceship Planet Earth” around. You don’t actually have a be a woman, but you do need to think like one:

BUCKY IDEA: Hold back waters while making energy.

Could an idea like Buckminster Fuller’s Floating Breakwater help protect coastal communities from storm surges?  This floating breakwater is designed for where it is too expensive to build permanent concrete walls. A side benefit is that this design actually captures the wave energy, not sure how you would use that energy, but it all sure starts to make sense in this day of climate change caused by fossil fuels.

This is just one of 818 patents held by Bucky, all designed to “do more with less” making maximum use of minimum resources, and all available to the public in the Special Collections Library at Stanford University. I have not been able to determine whether a breakwater like this was ever built.  Please share any information you have about this or other inventions by Bucky  — which were overlooked during America’s climate change denial phase.

Now, thanks to the ongoing “emergence through emergency”, climate change by any name is finally concerning a majority of Americans, who now owe it to their fellow planetary neighbors to speak out and demand an end to fossil fuel subsidies, and a reinvestment of those monies in solar, wind and wave. Please help speak the truth to power.

The sad and sorry days of blindly pursuing material wealth while forsaking our precious biosphere are finally, almost behind us.

Onward to solutions!

Think Bucky thoughts and have a wonderful summertime, 2013.

Getting back to the garden.

The beautiful summer weather in Northern California reminds me to recommend a smart and charming new documentary called Rebels with a Cause, about how Marin became Marin. Narrated by Francis McDormand, it tells the story of how a small group of rebellious Marinites worked to save the entire Marin Coast and more from development. You can see it on demand at http://krcb.org/video-on-demand/rebels-with-a-cause.

In celebration of what would have been Buckminster Fuller’s 118th birthday, this summer is a great time to ride a bike, hang your clothes to dry in the sun, and check out installing solar panels on your house. They even make solar installations now that double as shade structures and car parks. The financial side of solar is even starting to work. People (like me!) are waking up to the realization that we must fully harness the sun, the wind and the waves soon, so that we can leave two thirds of all fossil fuels in the ground, just as the United Nations says we must do. This, as Bucky said, is our “energy savings account” for emergencies.

We should be 100% clean energy by now. happy Brithday Bucky.001 Having clean, free energy will change the way we live in so many ways. Just imagine, if we don’t have to labor so hard for our daily energy supply (driving our car to a job so that we can afford to drive a car to our job) we’d have more time to read, to think, to understand, and maybe even plant a garden. We’ve simply “got to get back to the garden”…

Have you seen the brilliant “foodscaping” programs in Switzerland, where neighbors get together to plan their gardens so they can trade with each other? Even their front lawns are planted with healthy food. Maybe this will come to towns in America soon.

Bucky would hate to see the ongoing climate change denial (as in the GOP Congress) even now that extreme weather events and rising temperatures have become the new normal. This is one reason Bucky said women must take over the world. I think he’s right. Women surely won’t be such easy sellouts to corporations as our male leaders have been. Bucky’s idea was that “good governance is nurturance”, a feminine idea, right? So you don’t have to be woman, but just think like one. If we simply start to focus on “providing for the needs of 100% of humanity without ecological damage to anyone”, we might actually accomplish it. And we’ll certainly never know unless we try.

Here’s a great question for your climate denier friends: What would be the harm in improving the world? Worse case scenario, we switch to clean energy and in doing so we create a ton of new jobs and green economic activity and end up with a healthier, more sustainable world. What’s so wrong with that?

If you’re looking for more green fun this summer, hop on your bike! You might even arrive sooner than some people in cars, since small town summer traffic can be maddening. Ride to the outdoor music concerts where people bring their picnics and listen to music while watching the children and dogs play. Or to the farmer’s market, or to the beach or river. A clean fresh “swimming hole” is my idea of a miraculous summertime event! And stop and enjoy the birds wherever you live. Here in Marin we have rare White Pelicans that stop in at Shorebird Marsh, next to Nordstrom. They are migrating early this year. When my daughters were about 2 and 4, we watched one day as they shot off like canons and spiraled into the sky, their white bodies creating a perfect corkscrew to infinity against the blue sky. If you ever are lucky enough to see this, you’ll never forget it.

Do stop to smell the flowers! Oh wait, that is if you can find any that still smell. GMOs have modified many flowers to create bigger blossoms, and in doing so traded off the scent instead. I was recently at Home Depot and hardly any flowers had any scent; the geraniums and petunias have stopped smelling!

One more thing to add to our list of things to do:
1) Stop Monsanto from ruining our world and food supply,
2) No fracking,
3) No tar sands or massive new pipelines,
4) End fossil fuel subsidies,
5) Invest in alternatives,
6) Gun control,
7) Bank control,
8) Health rights for women,
9) Help women take over the world, and
10) Most importantly, everybody, go on vacation, relax and breathe, and get recharged so you can come back and be a great “trim tab” to help steer the world onto a better course this fall.

As more of us are realizing every day, Bucky was right: Humanity has a choice between utopian and oblivion. We’re all in this together. Either war is obsolete or man is. It’s Bucky World or bust. Let’s do this!

Have a great summer.

SHOPPING NOT OUR JOB

Our government says it’s our duty to keep shopping, when that is the very thing killing our planet. It is time for a spending strike to show that we can turn on and off the precious spending spigot at will. Could we  choose certain days on which to exit the economy as a demonstration of that power?  On Black Friday? Thanksgiving? Every first day of the month?  On these days we would do and spend nothing. We would not stock up before or after, but just make do with less. A sacrifice for the planet. We could refuse to buy anything made from fossil fuels, which is almost everything. Drive as little as possible. Eat no meat (which is the number one thing you can do to reduce your carbon footprint). Turn off the lights. Light the candles. Pray.

How else can we get our government to represent the will of the people, not the corporations?  How else can we bring about an end to fossil fuel subsidies, and a true beginning for a 100% clean energy world?

It is time for action. Or is that inaction?

The power of the people is greater than that of the people in power. As our government continues to ignore urgent warnings from 97% of scientists who say that serious environmental calamity is imminent, due to increasing levels of Co2 and methane from our continued use of fossil fuels, we can no longer afford to do anything other than sit here and do less. Much less.

As Bucky said, in order to evolve as a species, we must think, know and speak the truth and ONLY the truth.  Shopping is not our job. Thinking is our job.
